Magellan Marathon 2020

Below my race report from the Magellan Marathon 2020, Chile, the fourth and last race in the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020 series. The report features the race as well as various tourist impressions, including the breathtaking cementary in Punta Arenas and many pictures from a expedition to Patagonia and the majestic National Park Torres del Paine.

Punta Arenas
The main experience in Punta Arenas is of course overlooking the Magellan Strait and this cannot be done better than from my hotel the last night in town, Hotel Dreams del Estrecho, from the 8th floor to be very specific. Ok, well worth a visit is also the ship museum sporting full-scale replicas of Magellans ship Noa Victoria and Darwins ship HMS Beagle. Lastly, the Sara Braun Cementary of Punta Arenas is quite magical and a visual treat with the round-cut hedges, the cementary has actually been ranked by CNN as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

Patagonia and Torres del Paine
Monday, just after the Magellan Marathon 2020 Sunday, I joined an excursion to Patagonia and the 8th modern wonder of the world, Torres del Paine and this was an absolutely breathtaking. The trip also sported a visit to the cave of the extinct Milodón and a short wait at the beautiful lake at Puerto Natales. The race report features many stunning fotos from this very long day in Patagonia.

Magellan Marathon 2020
The Magellan Marathon 2020 in Punta Arenas, Chile, was the fourth and last of the four races in the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020. We started Sunday Jan. 19th at 09.00 AM and the route took us 8 times up and down the costline from just outsite our hotel. It was a beautiful sunny day but with extreme headwinds going “back”, so we ran de facto 21.1 km directly into something like 14-15 m/s of wind and sand and stuff blowing around. However, I think we were all kind of high actually finishing up the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020 series so the mood and fighting spirit was great!

KGI Marathon 2020

Antarctica!
Below my race report from the KGI Marathon 2020, King Georges Island, Antarctica, the third race of four in the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020 series. The race became my first marathon on Antarctica, thus collecting continent no. 6 in the process. It goes without saying that the Antarctica experience was just completely out of this world, which I trust you will also infer from the many pictures in the race report. It is certainly not every day your race course is being crossed by a bunch of penguins!!

Capital City Marathon 2020

Below my race report from the Capital City Marathon 2020, Argentina, the second race of four in the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020 series. In addition, the report features my arrival in Argentina and various tourist impressions from the argentinian capital Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires
My dearest memory from the experiences and landmarks in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is first and foremost the vistit to the grave of the renowed danish chessplayer GM Bent Larsen. And likewise was the visit to the Recoleta Cementary featuring the grave of Eva Peron (EVITA) a special thing. Buenos Aires is just an extremely big city and I probably only saw a few of the many landmarks on the bucket list there, but there are for sure some nice shots amongst my pictures as you can see in the race report below, including the Plaza de Mayo, the EVITA-building and the Parlament.

Capital City Marathon 2020
As you can read more detailed in the race report itself, the Capital City Marathon 2020 in Buenos Aires was the second of four races in the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020 and it was, moreover, the second marathon within the time span of less than 24 hours (cf. the Colonia Cost Marathon 2020 race report). In other words: we had a quite tough job in front of us when the race started out at 5 AM Wednesday morning in the argentinian capital. Add to this: heavy rain and an unparalleled thunderstorm lasting for 5 hours!

The race itself was actually pretty easy: completely flat, drink station at every mile and the group was in good spirit. The race report covers it all.

Colonia Cost Marathon 2020

Below my race report from the Colonia Cost Marathon 2020, Uruguay, the first race of four in the Southern Hemisphere Challenge 2020 series. The race became my first marathon in South America, thus earning continent no. 5 and country no. 51. It was a busy day with travel from and back to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and with shifting weather during the race, ie. starting out with rain and thunder and ending up with lovely sunshine and very warm conditions indeed. Colonia del Sacremento seems to be a quite and soothing place for sure and it was a real treat to run by the waters of the Rio de la Plata.
