Sunday June 8th 2025 I ran the Kigali International Peace Marathon in Rwanda. Find below my full race coverage from this marathon and some tourist impressions from the beautiful city of Kigali.
Kigali
There are two major talking points in Kigali/Rwanda: 1. The gorillas, 2. The Genocide of 1994. Whilst I did not get to see the gorillas live, I did indeed see the Memorial for the Belgium Peace Keepers, the “Hotel Rwanda” and the most important of all the +250 memorials throughout Rwanda, the Kigali Genocide Memorial. On a brighter note, we had much fun and pleasure visting the Niyo Arts Gallery. Reflecting on this visit to Kigali, this city seems very “western”, modern and clean compared to the other African countries I have seen; people on the streets, in the bars and restaurants etc. were fashionably dressed, well-mannered giving an almost “luxury” experience of Kigali. I think we all loved the stay!
Kigali International Peace Marathon 2025
The event carried mutiple distances, however only a few hundred participtants on the marathon distance. The course was extremely hilly and combined with an average temperature of 29 C and running in 1500 meters above sea level in sun exposure, this marathon was quite brutal for “white people” like myself. Luckily, the time keepers were very patient, letting everyone finish. The event was organized quite nicely, we only wished (in vain) for some Coca Cola or electolyte supplies along the route.
